Announcements

New solar canopy? Yes! Pay lot closure this summer? Yes.

The public pay lot on the Ogden campus near the Student Services Center and Ada Lindquist Plaza and Pond is getting a big sustainability upgrade!

WSU will be getting a solar canopy over the pay lot this summer. Unfortunately, that means a disruption to parking as the lot must be closed during construction. The public pay lot will close April 29, and soon after the project begins, it will be necessary to close a portion of the A10 lot as well. (See map for details.) Exact closure dates for A10 aren't available at this time.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but please know that we thank you and the Earth thanks you for your continued support and patience as we work to reduce our carbon footprint.

Town Hall Summary - April 19, 2024

Below are highlights from our end-of-semester town hall on April 19. The slides and full recording can be found on the president’s presentations website.

Response to HB 261: Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Update

Last Friday, I sent an email update to leaders within our institution ahead of the town hall outlining key changes we expect to implement in response to HB 261. This was also discussed at the town hall. These changes are a significant shift from the work we’ve done over the last three years to build our EDI division. However, we have made great strides in closing completion gaps for our students, and we will remain unwavering in that commitment. In the coming weeks, we will finalize the organizational structure, job descriptions and allocation of space. Please take a moment to provide feedback on our HB 261 plan and other changes associated with legislation passed this spring. There are several issues that we will still have to address related to this legislation including revising Weber State Amplified, a 5-year plan for growth, implementing requirements ensuring viewpoint diversity, conducting campus climate surveys and sharing syllabi. We will keep you updated with further guidance as it becomes available.

HB 438 & SB 192 Implementation

On May 1, HB 438 and SB 192 will go into effect. HB 438 provides additional structure and consistency to our tenure and post-tenure review processes, while SB 192 is most known for detailing presidential powers at institutions across the state. In response to this new legislation, we need to update several policies (links are included in the slide deck from the town hall). We are assembling a task force with broad representation from faculty, staff and administration to review the policies related to SB 192 over the summer.

Enrollment and FAFSA Updates

Summer registration is open, and we are seeing an increase in both our degree-seeking student count (6.5%) and budget-related FTE (5.9%). We also have promising first-time enrollment numbers where we are up over 25%. Despite an increase in admitted students for fall 2024 (25%), we are currently down in enrollment by 2.1% in our degree-seeking student count. One factor affecting this decline is the delay in processing FAFSA due to challenges with the data infrastructure at the national level. Barring further delays from the Department of Education, we anticipate that we will be able to start processing financial aid for students in the next few weeks. In the meantime, please encourage your students to complete the FAFSA as we are down by over 30% in FAFSA completion at the state level, and we recognize that financial challenges are one of the biggest barriers to student persistence.

Centralized Class Scheduling

During the last Utah Board of Higher Education meeting, the USHE Space Utilization Report was highlighted. The report notes that Weber State is the only institution that has not implemented centralized scheduling in alignment with the requirement in USHE Policy R751. We also recorded some of the lowest utilization numbers in the system. To align with policy requirements and ensure eligibility for future capital funding projects, we are piloting centralized scheduling on our campuses for spring 2025. Over the next few months, we will gather feedback from stakeholders across campus to inform this process.

Amplify Weber State Campaign

At the beginning of April, we launched the Light the W campaign to raise funds for a permanent solar panel “W” scheduled to be installed on the hillside above campus in time for this year’s homecoming festivities. Funds raised through these efforts contribute to our broader “Amplify Weber State” Comprehensive Campaign, which has already raised over $77 million toward our goal of $200 million by 2028.

Construction

Over the next few summers, we will convert additional areas of our campuses to xeriscape. This summer we are targeting areas surrounding Miller Administration, spots along the eastern half of Edvalson Drive, and around the Dee Events Center parking. Also, construction on the McKay Education building is delayed. As renovations started, we discovered that the original construction nearly 50 years ago did not follow the design plans. This necessitates incorporating some additional structural elements. Also, progress is finally apparent on the new hotel on the land along Harrison Boulevard by the Dee Events Center. It will be an Element by Westin, which is part of the Marriott family of hotels and has a wellness and sustainability focus.

As we approach the culmination of another academic year, we’ve had many opportunities across the institution to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students, faculty and staff. These celebrations acknowledge not only their accomplishments but also our work in challenging and guiding students to be successful both academically and in life. I hope to see you all at our upcoming commencement and convocation ceremonies this weekend to celebrate these achievements together!

Best,
brad

Don't Lose Your Emails and Google Drive Files After Graduation

As a reminder, WSU has implemented a policy to retire student @mail.weber.edu accounts for inactive students. These student email accounts are retired two and a half years after the start date of the last semester a student attends. Please note that this policy only impacts Wildcat mail and Google Drive accounts; eWeber accounts will remain active for accessing and ordering transcripts, viewing tax documents, and registering for future classes.

If you are graduating and/or no longer taking classes, it is essential that you take steps now to download or migrate your data. You can use the Google Takeout application to transfer your data to another Google account (Google Takeout instructions). Please note that once your account is retired, you will not be able to log in to it, and any data in the account will be permanently deleted within 12 months.

For more information and for answers to frequently asked questions, visit this page: Wildcat Mail Change FAQ. If you have any questions or concerns or need help downloading or transferring data from your account, contact the IT Service Desk at 801-626-7777, csupport@weber.edu, or at weber.edu/help.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2024 Presidential Awards for Community Engagement

Dr. Scott Moore - Community Engaged Faculty

Dr. Moore is an Associate Professor of Medical Lab Science who recognized an unmet opportunity for Community Engaged Learning courses in his department. He successfully received the CEL designation for 4 courses which has resulted in 1,500 students completing over 124,000 hours of community engaged learning.

Steffine Amodt - Community Engaged Student

Most notably, as an intern with Utah Representative Steve Eliason, Steffine helped to draft and advocate for what became known as the Code Blue Policy, which allowed for zoning laws to be temporarily suspended when temperatures dropped below a certain point, thus allowing for additional shelter for the unsheltered. Steffine is an undergraduate student in the Social Work department.

Monica Linford - Community Engaged Staff

Seeing the need to address food insecurity experienced by Weber State students, Monica partnered with CCEL, the Honors program, local artists, and the Eccles Community Art Center to host Hungry Bowls, which has raised $14,600 for the Weber Cares Pantry since 2022.

Marcie Valez - Community Engaged Almnus

Marcie Valdez graduated from Weber State University with a degree in Sociology in 1997. As the Director of Collective Impact at the United Way of Northern Utah, Marcie is working closely with CCEL to develop a university-assisted community schools model with Ogden School District.

Barbara Norris - Community Engaged Partner

Since 2018 Barbara has been working with Weber State’s Child and Family Studies department to provide engagement opportunities to students enrolled in the Family Studies Seminar. The training and volunteer opportunities that Barbara provides help to equip Weber students to work with children and families who are experiencing grief.

The Honors Program is seeking course proposals for the spring 2025 semester. You may choose to teach a one or three credit hour class. Our 1-credit hour discussion courses hone in on a particular work, genre, or trend in the form of a novel, film, selection of music, or gallery of artwork. You may also choose to teach a 3-credit hour class. We love supporting innovative, interdisciplinary courses that challenge and engage students. All Honors courses are capped at 15 students to allow for sustained, in-depth discussions.

Major Changes to Library Electronic Resources

The Stewart Library is a member of the Utah Academic Library Consortium, which includes all of the USHE degree granting institutions and Westminster University and BYU. We purchase some library electronic resources collectively because of the cost savings. The state institutions receive a legislative allocation to pay for these shared purchases and the funding has been flat since 2018. Some of these resources have been part of a statewide contract that also includes public and school libraries. That contract was 10-years old and needed to go to an RFP this year. The RFP selected a bid from Proquest that was substantially lower than the current provider, EBSCO. The EBSCO bid would have required canceling other resources that UALC purchases outside of the state contract. On July 1, the library will switch access to the Proquest subscriptions. The contract is for 5 years.

What does this mean for content coverage?

  • Academic Search Ultimate (ASU) will be replaced by Proquest Central. This is a large full-text database that aggregates content from different publishers. There is around a 30% overlap in titles but each database has strengths in coverage from different publishers. Proquest Central, for example, has stronger coverage of Springer/Nature journals, as well as dissertations. For the 53 high-use titles in ASU (defined as more than 100 downloads per year), 17 titles have only citations/abstracts in Proquest central and would be available via interlibrary loan. Only 3 are not indexed in Proquest Central at all.
  • Indexing and Abstracting Databases: The state contract also includes discipline-specific databases that provide either citations and abstracts only or citations/abstracts with some limited full text. These will change on July 1. There is overlap in the titles indexed and comparable coverage in Proquest. EBSCO and Proquest, as in the full text database above, have different strengths.
  • Duplicate coverage: Proquest Central provides access to resources that Stewart Library already subscribes to. During our renewal cycle, we will cancel some of these subscriptions and use the savings to fill in gaps.
  • UALC subscriptions to EBSCO databases outside of the state contract: UALC will continue to subscribe to resources outside of the state contract. These include high-use and core resources like CINAHL, the MLA Bibliography, and PsycInfo. UALC might also subscribe to some additional resources to fill in gaps created by switching from EBSCO to Proquest, using cost savings from the lower cost of the new statewide contract. These options are currently being developed as we receive quotes from multiple vendors.

What does this mean for teaching and the user experience?

  • The search interfaces will change for a significant number of library resources. This will happen on July 1. The library can provide access to training materials, and your subject librarian can work with you and your students to learn the new interfaces. All of the new resources will have comparable features for saving, exporting, citation tools, and links to interlibrary loan services.
  • We are currently expecting advance access to the Proquest resources some time in May, so that faculty and librarians can begin to prepare for teaching in the fall. We will update you as soon as we get a firm date.
  • If you have permalinks in Canvas or other learning materials to content in the affected EBSCO databases, you will need to change these links to the same content that is available in Proquest or another library subscription or make a request with our Course Reserves service to locate a copy of that content that we can provide through our electronic reserve system. Your subject librarian can also help you find new content.

Title / Coverage Lists

Potential gaps and areas of concern

  • Business Source Premier was part of the EBSCO statewide package. There is some overlap with ABI Inform, but some core resources, such as Harvard Business Review, are not included in ABI.
  • PDF coverage in journal and magazine titles:
    • Academic Search Ultimate: 96% PDF coverage.
    • Proquest Central: 88% PDF coverage.
    • No overlap analysis of these titles has been done to see if some of the titles lacking PDF coverage in Proquest Central are the same in ASU. Further analysis can be done to see if high use titles available in Proquest Central lack PDF coverage.

The library Collection Management Team is currently analyzing all of our subscriptions in order to identify how to address duplication and gaps resulting from the switch to Proquest. While some access to some journals and databases will change, the library will provide comparable coverage as we renew subscriptions during the 2024 fiscal year. We will ensure that robust discovery platforms and document delivery through interlibrary loan and other mechanisms are in place to ease the transition and speedily deliver what you need for teaching and research. Please contact your subject librarian if you have specific questions and concerns.

Join Us in Thanking LaĆs Martinez

Please join us in thanking Laís Martinez for serving as our Interim Vice President of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) over the past five months. Laís has served an important role in facilitating equity audits across the institution, completing the hires of several staff positions in the division, establishing our Campus Climate Team, and engaging conversations about the structure of our EDI efforts moving forward. Despite our structural conversations shifting with the passage of HB 261, Laís has been instrumental in bringing together the voices of our campus community to discuss how to ensure we are meeting our students where they are and helping them to be successful now and in the future.

We invite you to join us in thanking Laís at a reception on May 1st, from 11:00am to 12:30pm, at Shepherd Union Fireplace Lounge before she returns full-time to her position at the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) on May 2nd.

While Laís will no longer be on campus, we will still collaborate with her in her role at USHE as we continue our work to close completion gaps and support our students no matter their background.
